Accessibility Statement

The Botany Bay Hotel is situated on the magnificent clifftop at Kingsgate near Broadstairs, overlooking Botany Bay. Our hotel was extensively refurbished in 2014, but it dates back to the 1920s, and while we aim to meet the needs of all our guests, there are some features which might make access difficult for people with limited mobility.

Local Area

The hotel sits next to the famous North Foreland Golf Club, and is within a few miles of the Open Championship links courses of Prince’s Golf Club and The Royal St. George’s in Sandwich. If you’re not a fan of golf, you might prefer to explore the unique heritage of nearby Broadstairs. Stroll around the seaside town’s cobbled streets to discover visitor attractions including Bleak House, once the summer home of Victorian author Charles Dickens; and the Dickens House Museum. Also within half an hour drive are the cathedral city of Canterbury or the coastal resort of Whitstable. The Turner Contemporary gallery is just three miles away in Margate, which also boasts the Dreamland amusement park.


  • The nearest shops are approximately 1 mile away.
  • The nearest bus stop is 1 mile from the property, and is called the 19th Hole stop by the 19th Hole Public House. There is no shelter or seating.
  • Buses (The Loop) run approximately every 20 minutes to Margate, Broadstairs, Ramsgate and Westwood Cross shopping complex. The bus service stops prior to midnight.
  • Broadstairs railway station is approximately 2.6 miles away, and connects with Canterbury and London railway stations.
  • Taxis are usually available at Broadstairs station but we can book one for you in advance if required.
  • London airports are approximately 2h 30mins by car.

Car Parking: We have a 26 bay car park to the rear of the hotel, and 9 bay car park to the side (Kingsgate Avenue). Car parking to the front of the hotel is available, but this land is not owned or operated by the hotel.

Arrival: Access is gained from three entrances: the front entrance has three steps of between 10-20cm, with ramped access also available. The entrance from the rear car park has five steps of between 15-19cm. The side entrance has a level path and steps.

All entrances are well lit until 2am, when the external lights are switched off.

Last check-in is at 10.30pm. Assistance can be given with luggage on arrival. The hotel does not operate a 24 hour reception desk, and is manned between 8am and 10pm.

Reception & bar areas: The hotel reception area doesn’t offer any seating, however the bar has plenty and is just a couple of metres away from the desk. Lowered tables are available on the decking to the side of the hotel, with more furniture available if requested.

We have an internal ramp with a 1.5 gradient, which is 73cm wide and 3.6m long. Assistance will be offered as wheelchair users may not have enough space to wheel themselves.

Our accessible washroom facilities are accessed via the ground floor bar and have a floor space up to 120cm x 120cm. The washroom only allows for a left hand transfer.

Bedrooms: The hotel has two guest rooms offering disabled access: a twin room and double bedroom, both with en-suite. The twin room has a clearance of 120cm x 120cm for the washroom area, which has a lowered bath and shower in the bath with hand rails. The bath is not a walk-in. The bed in this room isn’t zip and link.

When a function is taking place at the hotel, guests in ground floor rooms may sometimes be requested to access them via an outside door on the same level.

Our sea-view rooms and two superior family rooms are accessed via 20 steps, while standard doubles on the side of the hotel are accessed via 16 steps. There is a hand rail on one side of all steps.

Our beds are normally made up with duvets but sheets and blankets can be provided if preferred.

All rooms have flat screen Freeview TVs with 10 channels and a wardrobe. Lamps are supplied in all rooms, and we also have two battery operated side lamps available should guests need additional light. These lamps are available from reception and are to be signed in/out. A chest of drawers is included in most of the rooms.

We are able to accommodate guests’ dogs, and welcome assistance dogs, however we only have four dog ‘friendly’ rooms.

Public Areas: Halls, stairs, corridors and landings are well lit using a combination of ceiling and wall lights. All corridor lights are switched on manually and stay on for five minutes. The Hotel is centrally heated throughout, but temperatures can be adjusted in each room to suit individual requirements. There are automatic audible smoke alarms in the main and upper halls.

Public Toilets: There are ground floor toilets behind the bar and beside the function room, which is available to guests during the day and evening.

Restaurant & Orangery: Breakfast is served in the Restaurant, which is situated on the ground floor. There is an internal ramp to the entrance, and it is fully carpeted. Large windows allow plenty of natural light, supplemented by adjustable overhead lights. The Orangery has a living flame gas fire to supplement the central heating if required. The decking area can be accessed via the orangery. No dogs are permitted in either the restaurant or orangery, except assistance dogs.

Garden: We have a paved side garden, with 15 picnic-style benches and wooden chairs, which guests may use as a designated smoking area, as smoking is not permitted in the property.



Additional Information

Emergency: There are instructions in case of fire posted on the back of all guest room doors. Guests with a disability are reminded to inform reception should they require assistance in the event of an evacuation. There is an information folder in every room containing a local map, information on local attractions and NHS facilities.

Special diets: We are happy to cater for special diets where possible. Please advise us before your arrival.

Connectivity: Free Wi-Fi facilities are available. Mobile phone reception is generally poor.

Refridgeration Facilities: We can refrigerate prescription medication, but are unable to store perishable food or dog food in our fridges.
